Jacy and friends

We had made plans to meet our friend Brandy Correa, and her son Jayden, at Pier 39 for lunch on Saturday. We got a call about an hour before we needed to leave saying, "Well, we are in SFO but we won't be at the Pier to meet you.” Poor Jayden had a long seizure at his home and was admitted to the hospital in Stockton. About 4 hours later he was released to go home, but soon after arriving home he had another full-blown seizure requiring their 2nd call to 911 of the night. After the second seizure there were transferred from the hospital in Stockton, CA to UCSF in San Francisco. Our hotel was only a couple of blocks from the hospital, so we were able to spend some time with them on Saturday. We hadn't seen them in just over 1 year. It was GREAT to see them again! Brandy and I have stayed in touch and become good friends over the past year. We have helped each other get through the tough times. Little Jayden has gotten so tall!!! Poor little guy was on so much medication that he was out of it while we were there, but Jacy waved and waved at him while he was in the hospital crib. Jayden was released from the hospital on Sunday, and they were able to come and join us for lunch.


We finally got to meet Cristy, Jerry, and their little girl Faith. Faith also has Spina Bifida, and had the repair done after she was born. She was actually born a few days before Jacy and I left California to come home, but because of busy schedules we were not able to meet them. We have communicated over the past year by phone and e-mail, and planned the girls’ 1-year follow up appointments for the same time so that we could finally meet in person. We were able to hang out with them at Pier 39 for a couple of hours, and had a blast! I think the most memorable moment was the 6 of us getting stuck in the LITTLE elevator at the “Aquarium At The Bay”. The elevator stopped, but wouldn’t open the door to let us out! Luckily they heard us knocking and came to our rescue! It was so great to spend some time and get to know you!

On Sunday we got meet up with Valerie and Travis and their little boy Titus. Titus was born just a couple of days before I got to bring Jacy home from California. He also has Spina Bifida. He had fetal surgery in February and was born the beginning of May. He is such a cutie!!! We were so glad to see them! They live about 2 hours away from San Francisco. Thanks for coming to see us!

Laura is the discharge coordinator for the NICU at UCSF. She coordinated the medical supplies that are delivered to our home each month for Jacy, so that I wouldn’t have to worry about it. She is also the one who treated me and Brandy to the San Francisco Giants vs. the Milwaukee Brewers baseball game to get us out of the hospital for a few hours. It was an awesome game Laura, and the fresh air was much needed. Thanks again!

Elder and Sister Randall are the missionary couple assigned to the UCSF area. They are wonderful! They took me grocery shopping while I was staying in the family house, and they came to visit me and Jacy during our long stay in the hospital. They even gave Jacy her first car ride!!! They are the ones who came and picked Jacy and me up at the hospital and gave us a ride to the family house.

Native Drums

For the past 6 weeks Jayne's class (all the 4th and 5th graders) at school have been working with a resident artist learning about the  Tlingit (KLING kit), the Haida (HIGH duh) and the Tsimshian (SIM she ann) native tribes of Southeast Alaska. They have learned how to introduce themselves in the native tongue. They have learned about the art and form styles used in totems and the meanings behind the symbols. They even had the opportunity to make a deer skin drum (Goo-jow), including soaking the deer skin and stretching it over the wood drum frame and letting it set until it hardened. Once it was completely dry they got to draw their chosen native symbol on the drum and the paint it. They look SO COOL! They even made their own drum stick using a stick, fabric, buck leather, and deer tendon, which was used as the string to tie it all together. This past week the students performed for the rest of the school, singing a song/chant in the native tongue. It is a welcome message...

Whale Watching

This weekend was BEAUTIFUL weather!!!  We have all been feeling a little under the weather, but we have made sure to get outside a little each day.  On Saturday we were fortunate enough to be downtown by the cruise ships docks and caught a few glimpses of a humpback whale!  When they bubble feed you can see a ring of bubble start to surface on the water and then they come straight up the center with open mouths to feed.  It is so cool to see them!  They are really big!  Sunday afternoon was a nice drive to all the great spots that we love to view the ocean from.  It was a gorgeous sunset!  Someday I still can't believe that we live here!!!
